On February 28, the Sunday Times carried a story about the awarding of grades for GCSE science in 2009, claiming that Ofqual had acted secretly to downgrade results. The story was picked up by a number of other newspapers the next day, including the Daily Mail.

Advanced Science Criteria consultation online

Ofqual is seeking views on draft criteria for the principal learning part of the Diploma qualification in science at advanced level. Principal learning is one of the mandatory components of the Diploma.

Centre closures during January 2010 exam series

Ofqual today announces that the number of centres which were closed during the winter examination series due to the adverse weather conditions was a total of 14 centres.

Kathleen Tattersall, Chair of Ofqual, has thanked all those involved in the recent examination series for their efforts to ensure that disruption caused by the adverse weather was kept to a minimum.

Contingencies for examinations

At Ofqual, we recognise the stress and upset that the adverse weather is causing to candidates who have been preparing hard for next week's exams. Tried and tested contingency plans are in place to deal with disruption to exams.

GCSE sciences criteria published

Ofqual, together with its regulatory partners in Wales (DCELLS) and Northern Ireland (CCEA), has today published new subject criteria for GCSE science subjects: science, additional science, additional applied science, biology, chemistry and physics.
